I don't know about you, but some years it seems as though every time you turn around, there is another funeral to attend. Sometimes it is one of our elder saints - someone who has lived life of love and giving and hardship and LIFE for 90+ years and is ready to go home to their heavenly Father. Sometimes it is that demon, cancer, that takes a loved one away, whether young (why, LORD, why?!?) or old. Sometimes, and this is, I believe, the most difficult, a tragic accident or suicide or drugs -- someone who seemingly has the whole world ahead of them or was just starting out and had so much to bring to make the world a better place. And we cry out, "Why? Why, oh, Lord?!?" Sometimes, I page through my Bible, wondering. . .how can this possibly help? And often, the Holy Spirit guides me to a passage or a psalm that expresses my anguish, or may sooth my soul. It may not always answer my question, but I have come to know that sometimes there is no answer for my question. Many people have cried out to the Lord through the ages. I don't understand. My heart aches. But. . .God does care. And I cling to that, even as my tears flood my eyes and I feel as if I'm hanging on by my fingertips. Today, Psalm 46 is my balm. May it bring a little balm to your soul if you need it.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations He has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
